HTC’s Magic finally arrived in the What Laptop office today, following hot on the heels of the Palm Pre. First impressions are favourable, with a hugely positive reaction among the team – it’s a lot smaller than it looks in photographs, and is both stylish and well made.
The white casing is simple and cohesively designed. There are a smattering of buttons on the front below the display, including home, menu, back and zoom keys, along with call and enter. There’s also a Blackberry-like rollerball. Aside from these, all functions are carried out via the touchscreen display.
The Android OS is as easy to navigate as ever, although we haven’t yet had the chance to have a full look at this latest incarnation. The screen is bright and colourful, and responsive to inputs. It also features haptic feedback, vibrating gently as you enter text.
As with the Palm Pre, onscreen buttons are all large and easy to press with your fingers or thumbs, and browsing the internet on the Magic proved a pleasure. It’s easy to zoom in on pages, and everything works quickly and smoothly.

To see how we get on, and for a full review of the HTC Magic, check back here in the next couple of days.
