It’s been a long time coming, but the VAIO Mini W-series represents Sony’s first foray into the netbook market. With a 10.1-inch screen, Intel Atom processor and a sub-£500 price, it falls broadly in line with rival products.
The 10.1-inch screen promises to set it apart, however, with a 1366 x 768 pixel resolution that should result in sharper images than other netbooks, along with the ability to work with two or more windows simultaneously.
The weight of 1.2kg also puts this at the more portable end of the netbook spectrum. Available in white, pink and brown, and with a host of familiar Sony styling cues – such as the isolated keyboard and large VAIO logo on the rear of the display – the company is pitching its netbook as a lifestyle product, claiming it’ll catch your friends’ attention and sit beautifully anywhere in the house.
Internally, the components are bog-standard netbook fare, with an Intel Atom N280 processor and 1024MB of memory. The 160GB hard drive is also average, although connectivity is good, with 802.11n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth both provided.

Unfortunately, with no direct sales channel, Sony has stopped providing pricing for its latest products. Until the Mini W hits the shelves, then, we’re unable to tell you how much it costs.
